What is a JEDEC matrix tray?

Are JEDEC trays with the same outside dimensions interchangeable?

No. The cavity dimensions, support areas, orientation, stacking features, and material can differ. The review needs to establish how the device sits in the tray and what happens when the trays are stacked and handled. A matching outside outline is only one part of that review. Is one molded part number enough to find a replacement?

It can be a useful lead, but the full identification matters. Send clear photographs of the top, bottom, both end tabs, and every molded marking, along with the device information. Why do revision letters matter?

A revision can identify a design change. Its effect may be minor for one device and significant for another. Review the complete identifier and actual fit before accepting a replacement simply because the main number matches. Keep the reference tray available if the difference cannot be resolved from photographs and drawings.

Will I need to send a tray or device sample?

Clear photographs and a complete drawing may be enough to begin the search. Samples can be needed when pocket contact is uncertain, the device is unusual, a revision needs comparison, or the application requires physical approval. Start by sending what you have; the review can identify whether a sample is the next useful step.

Can I use a tray for baking if its temperature marking is high enough?

The marking is a starting point for review. Provide the actual temperature, exposure time, repeated cycles, loading, and support conditions. The tray material and finished-tray capability need to suit that process. Device bake requirements also need to be established for the device. What is the difference between cleaned and requalified reusable trays?

Cleaning addresses contamination. Requalification also evaluates the identified tray against requirements for its intended use, with an acceptance decision and supporting records. Does a black tray automatically provide the required ESD protection?

Do I need an empty cover tray and a strap or band?

Include the approved cover arrangement when planning the stack. A matching empty tray often forms the top cover, and those empty trays count toward the required quantity. Can I ask about a small quantity?

Yes. Send the quantity and date needed, including any empty cover trays. Minimum quantities and availability depend on the specific design, material, condition, and supply option. What information is needed to discuss price and lead time?
