ESD Receiving and Handling: A Practical Checklist

A receiving desk can become an ESD handling point as soon as someone opens a package containing sensitive electronics. The important question is where that opening happens and what protects the parts during the next step. A useful handling procedure follows the package from receipt to storage or production.

At receipt, inspect before opening

Check the shipment identity, quantity, external damage, and handling labels. Keep the protective inner package closed while deciding where the contents should go. If a count or inspection requires exposed components, move the work to the designated ESD protected area and follow the site’s procedure.

Keep the supplier’s part number, lot information, and packaging instructions with the material. Record damaged closures, punctures, contamination, or displaced contents. Set questionable packages aside for review instead of making an unrecorded packaging substitution.

Prepare the handling area

Before exposing parts, confirm that the workstation and personnel controls required by the site’s ESD program are in place. Remove unnecessary ordinary plastic, foam, and office supplies from the immediate handling area. Have the approved receiving tray or container ready before opening the original package.

The EOS/ESD Association’s basic control guidance explains the role of protected areas, grounding, and packaging. The site’s documented procedure should turn those principles into clear instructions for the actual receiving station.

Transfer parts without losing protection or identity

Use the component’s approved handling surfaces. Avoid using leads, terminals, or delicate edges as gripping points. Check that the receiving carrier is the correct type and revision, and that its pockets or supports clear the component features.

Keep part and lot identification attached to the receiving container. If a shipment is split between storage and production, maintain traceability for both portions. Return unused parts to their approved packaging and close it as required before they leave the controlled area.

Give staff a clear stop point

Train on the actual task

Show the correct opening, transfer, counting, and closing sequence with the packaging employees will use. Ask the operator to demonstrate it back, including what to do when something is wrong. A general ESD presentation alone does not establish that a person can perform a particular receiving task.

Keep the work instruction close to the station. Review it when the component, package, equipment, or handling route changes, and record training and verification as required by the site’s program.
